How to Drain Coolant From a Car

When it’s time for a new coolant change for your car, you don’t have to take it to the shop. You can do it yourself and save money. Here’s how to drain coolant from a car.

Step 1: Turn Off the Engine

First of all, make sure that the engine is completely turned off and the ignition is not in use. You don’t want to accidentally start your engine while draining the coolant.

Step 2: Locate the Radiator

Locate the radiator in your car. It’s typically in the front (passenger side). Remember, coolant is corrosive, so you should handle it with care.

Step 3: Prepare the Drain Hose

Connect the drain hose to your coolant reservoir and attach it to a bucket or container. This will help you easily store used coolant and dispose of it properly.

Step 4: Open the Drain Plug

Open the radiator’s drain plug and use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the plug. Make sure to be careful as you don’t want to damage the plug.

Step 5: Let the Coolant Drain

Leave the plug open and let the coolant slowly drain into the bucket until all of the old coolant has been removed from the radiator.

Step 6: Replace the Drain Plug

Once all of the old coolant has been drained, replace the drain plug and make sure that it is tightened properly.

Step 7: Dispose of the Used Coolant

Take the used coolant to your local recycling center or auto repair shop to have it disposed of properly.

Things to Remember

  • Be patient — draining the coolant can be time consuming.
  • Listen to safety instructions — make sure to follow all safety instructions when draining coolant.
  • Wear protective gear — wear protective gloves, eyewear and clothing when draining coolant.

Draining the coolant from your car is important for the health of your car. As long as you use the proper safety precautions and take care when draining the coolant, it can be easily done.
